I. Einleitung

1879 erschuf der antijüdische Journalist Wilhelm Marr jenes Wort, unter dem die antijüdischen Stimmungen und Einstellungen von nun an subsumiert werden sollten: „Antisemitismus"1. Dieser Sammelbegriff fußte auf dem antiken und mittelalterlichen Judenhass, welcher hauptsächlich religiös motiviert war, und gab ihm erstmals einen wissenschaftlichen Anstrich2. In der Folge wurde der Antisemitismus verstärkt im politischen und rassischen Sinn benutzt. So gründeten sich im Deutschen Kaiserreich erstmals antisemitische Parteien, und Männer wie der protestantische Prediger Adolf Stoecker von der Christlich-Sozialen Partei trugen den Antisemitismus gezielt in die Bevölkerung. Wichtige Beiträge zum „rassischen Antisemitismus" leistete unter anderem auch Houston Stewart Chamberlain, der in sein Werk Die Grundlagen des XIX. Jahrhunderts auch völkische Ideen übernahm3.

In dieser Hausarbeit soll untersucht werden, warum eine primitive Fälschung, deren Ursprung schon wenige Jahre nach ihrer Entstehung aufgedeckt und literarisch aufbereitet wurde4, so begierig aufgenommen werden konnte. Bei der Untersuchung der Herkunft der Protokolle soll weniger auf die mannigfaltigen jüdischen Verschwörungstheorien eingegangen werden, als vielmehr auf die tatsächliche Vorgeschichte, wobei auch eine wichtige Legitimierungsgrundlage, die Rede des Oberrabbiners von Prag aus dem Roman Biarritz, behandelt werden soll. Die abstrusen, sich zum Teil widersprechenden Aussagen der Hersteller, Verbreiter und Sympathisanten sollen hierbei außer acht gelassen werden5. Nach einer kurzen inhaltlichen Untersuchung wird im letzten Teil auf die Wirkung der Protokolle im Deutschen Reich und in den Vereinigten Staaten hingewiesen. Außerdem werden zwei wichtige Einschnitte, bei denen die Protokolle als Fälschung entlarvt und öffentlich bekannt gemacht wurden, untersucht. Schließlich soll kurz auf die Gründe des weltweiten Erfolgs der Protokolle eingegangen werden.



II. Theorien zur Entstehung der Protokolle

a) Von den Freimaurern zu den Juden

Die Vorgeschichte der Protokolle beginnt weit vor der ersten Veröffentlichung 1903 in der russischen Zeitung Snamja (Das Banner)6. Schon seit dem 18. Jahrhundert existiert die These einer Weltverschwörung, die größtenteils unbemerkt die Geschicke der Menschheit leitet. Die Idee einer freimaurerischen Verschwörung verfolgte schon der französische Geistliche Abbé Barruel 1797 in seinem Werk Mémoire pour servir à l`histoire du Jacobinisme7. Diese bezog zwar die Juden nicht mit ein, jedoch wurde auch der Gedanke der Zusammenarbeit von Juden und Freimaurern von Barruel verbreitet. Denn aufgrund eines Briefes eines gewissen Hauptmannes Jean-Baptiste Simonini aus dem Jahre 1806, in dem Barruel eröffnet wurde, dass Juden den Freimaurer- und Illuminatenorden gegründet hatten, entwarf er seine Vision einer jüdisch-freimaurerischen Verschwörung, wobei er die Andeutungen Simoninis noch übertraf8. Somit war der Weg für zukünftige Verschwörungstheorien geebnet, wobei der Topos „jüdisch-freimaurerisch" von nun an die Konstante sein sollte.



 
3. Das verschwundene Original: Die „Ur-Protokolle" in französischer Sprache
 
Als dritte Quelle der heute bekannten Versionen der „Protokolle" gilt ein fiktiver Grundtext. Während von
antisemitischer Seite behauptet wurde, die vermeintlich authentische „Urschrift" sei in französischer Sprache

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is a document describing a plan to achieve Jewish global domination, supposedly produced by an international Jewish conspiracy. The overwhelming majority of historians in the United States and Europe strongly believe the Protocols to be a forgery produced by the Tsarist Russian secret police, the Okhranka.

It is widely considered to mark the beginning of the tradition of conspiracy theory literature, such as "None Dare Call it Conspiracy" and "Conspirators Hierarchy: the Committee of 300". The Protocols, which draw on popular anti-Semitic notions which have their roots in medieval Europe from the time of the Crusades, are simultaneously the most notorious and most successful work of modern anti-Semitism.



The conceptual inspiration for the Protocols can be traced back to the time of the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century. At that time, a French Jesuit named Abb? Barruel, representing reactionary elements opposed to the revolution, published in 1797 a treatise blaming the Revolution on a secret conspiracy operating through the Order of Freemasons, called the Illuminati. French nobility at the time was heavily Masonic. Barruel was influenced by a Scottish Mason and professor of natural philosophy named John Robison who in 1798, published a book called Proofs of a Conspiracy which charged the Illuminati of conspiring to destroy all the governments and religions of Europe. In his treatise, Barruel did not himself blame the Jews, who were emancipated as a result of the Revolution. However, in 1806, Barruel circulated a forged letter, probably sent to him by members of the state police opposed to Napoleon Bonaparte's liberal policy toward the Jews, calling attention to the alleged part of the Jews in the conspiracy he had earlier attributed to the Masons. This belief that there exists an international Jewish conspiracy reappeared later on in various countries of 19th century Europe.

The direct predecessor of the Protocols can be found in the pamphlet "Dialogues in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu", published by the non-Jewish French satirist Maurice Joly in 1864. In his "Dialogues", which make no mention of the Jews, Joly attacked the political ambitions of the emperor Napoleon III using the imagery of a diabolical plot in Hell. The "Dialogues" were caught by the French authorities soon after their publication and Joly was tried and sentenced to prison for his pamphlet.



Joly's "Dialogues", while intended as a political satire, soon fell into the hands of a German anti-Semite named Hermann Goedsche writing under the name of Sir John Retcliffe. Goedsche was a postal clerk and a spy for the Prussian secret police. He had been forced to leave postal work due to his part in forging evidence in the prosecution against the Democratic leader Benedict Waldeck in 1849. Goedsche adapted Joly's "Dialogues" into a mythical tale of a Jewish conspiracy as part of a series of novels entitled "Biarritz", which appeared in 1868. In a chapter called "The Jewish Cemetery in Prague and the Council of Representatives of the Twelve Tribes of Israel", he spins the fantasy of a secret centennial rabbinical conference which meets at midnight and whose purpose is to review the past hundred years and to make plans for the next century.

Goedsche's plagiary of Joly's "Dialogues" soon found its way to Russia. It was translated into Russian in 1872, and a consolidation of the "council of representatives" under the name "Rabbi's Speech" appeared in Russian in 1891. These works no doubt furnished the Russian secret police (Okhranka) with a means to strengthen the position of the weak Tsar Nicholas II and discredit the reforms of the liberals who sympathized with the Jews. During the Dreyfus affair of 1893-1895, agents of the Okhranka in Paris redacted the earlier works of Joly and Goedsche into a new edition which they called the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion". The manuscript of the Protocols was brought to Russia in 1895 and was printed privately in 1897.

The Protocols did not become public until 1905, when Russia's defeat in the Russo-Japanese War was blamed on the Jews. The next year a revolution led to Russia's first constitution and institution of the Duma. In the wake of these events, the reactionary "Union of the Russian Nation" or Black Hundreds organization sought to incite popular feeling against the Jews, whom they blamed for the Revolution and the Constitution as well as losing the war.

The Protocols were part of a propaganda campaign which accompanied the pogroms of 1905 inspired by the Okhranka. A variant text of the Protocols was published by George Butmi in 1906 and again in 1907. The edition of 1906 was found among the Tsar's collection, even though he had publicly denounced the work as a forgery. In later editions, Nilus claimed that the Protocols had been read secretly at the First Zionist Congress at Basel in 1897, while Butmi in his edition wrote that they had no connection with the new Zionist movement, but rather were part of a Masonic conspiracy




Ulrich Fleischhauer (1876, Thamsbrück, now part of Bad Langensalza, Germany – 1960) was a leading antisemitic publisher of books and news articles reporting on an alleged Judeo-Masonic conspiracy theory and supposed "nefarious plots" by clandestine Jewish interests to dominate the world.

His career was at first grounded in the Imperial German Army where by 1918 Fleischhauer rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and regimental commander of a field artillery unit in Colmar. After suffering serious wounds, Fleischhauer retired from military service and received a government pension, although he continued to serve for some time as chairman of the National Federation of German Officers (Nationalverbandes Deutscher Offiziere).

No longer in the army, Fleischhauer sought out something else to do full-time. The draw of the public policy arena attracted him. In the aftermath of the defeat of the German and Austria-Hungarian empires, a number of new political parties emerged, many arguing for pan-Germanism. Fleischhauer joined the German National People's Party (Deutschnationale Volkspartei, or DNVP) and was a representative of the racist wing arguing for even more radical far right policies. Intellectually, Fleischhauer was a disciple of Theodor Fritsch and through their common Völkisch movement circles he also developed friendships with a number of other revolutionary nationalists in secretive Aryan organizations such as the Thule Society. Fleischhauer was especially close to poet and political activist Dietrich Eckart, an early backer of Adolf Hitler.



Rom: Der ehemalige Präsident von Italien, Francesco Cossiga (1985-1992), hat bereits am 30.November der angesehensten Zeitung Italiens, "Corriere della Sera", ein Interview gegeben, in dem er zu den Attentaten am 11.September 2001 wörtlich (1) folgendes sagte:

Ptech: Nicht die Durchschnitts-Softwarefirma

Ptech wurde 1994 in Quincy, Massachusetts, gegründet und ging 1996 einen Vertrag mit DARPA ein, um den Verteidigungssektor mit gewerblichen Softwarelösungen zu beliefern. 1997 erhielt sie die offizielle Erlaubnis, sich um Rüstungsverträge und um Aufträge einiger anderer Regierungsbehörden zu bewerben. Innerhalb von vier Jahren baute sich Ptech einen Kundenkreis auf, der jeden anderen Dritthersteller von Software vor Neid erblassen ließe.

Vom Allerheiligsten des Weißen Hauses zum Hauptquartier des FBI, vom Sitz der FAA bis hin zur Chefetage von IBM, einige der sichersten Organisationen der Welt, welche auf den sichersten Servern die heikelsten Daten abgespeichert hatten, hießen Ptech in ihrer Mitte wilkommen. Ptech wurden die Schlüssel zum Cyber-Königreich gegeben, um detailierte Bilder dieser Organisationen, ihrer Schwächen und Schwachstellen zu erstellen und aufzuzeigen, wie diese Probleme von Leuten mit bösen Absichten ausgenutzt werden könnten. Trotz all des unglaublichen Erfolgs dieser Firma waren die Top-Investoren und Angestellten Leute mit Hintergründen, die bei der Regierung die Alarmglocken hätten schrillen lassen sollen.

Die Firma wurde mit 20 Millionen $ Startkapital gegründet, 5 Millionen $ davon wurden von Yassin al-Qadi bereitgestellt, einem wohlhabenden saudischen Geschäftsmann mit guten Verbindungen welcher gerne mit seiner Vertrautheit mit Dick Cheney prahlte. Er hatte ebenfalls Verbindungen zu muslimischen Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen die verdächtigt werden, internationalen Terrorismus finanziert zu haben. Nach 9/11 wurde er von der US-Regierung offiziell zum "Special Designated Global Terrorist" erklärt und seine Konten wurden eingefroren. Zu dieser Zeit verneinten die Eigentümer und das Management von Ptech, dass al-Qadi in irgendeiner Weise an der Firma beteiligt war, mit Ausnahme seines Anteils am Startkapital, aber das FBI beharrt darauf dass in Wirklichkeit Al-Qadi weitere Millionen durch diverse Fonds und Investments in die Firma investiert hätte. Firmeninsider sagten gegenüber FBI-Beamten, dass sie 1999 nach Saudi Arabien flogen um Ptech-Investoren zu treffen und Al-Qadi wurde ihnen als einer der Eigentümer vorgestellt. Es wurde ebenfalls berichtet dass Hussein Ibrahim, Chefwissenschaftler bei Ptech, al-Quadis Vertreter bei Ptech war und dass al-Quadis Anwälte zugaben, dass al-Quadis Vertreter möglicherweise auch nach 9/11 noch im Vorstand saß.

Ibrahim selbst ist ein ehemaliger Präsident von BMI, einer in New-Jersey gelegenen Immobilieninvestmentfirma, die auch eine der Startinvestoren von Ptech war und Finanzmittel für Ptechs Gründungskapital bereitstellte. Ptech mietete Büroraum und Computer-Ausrüstung von BMI und BMI teilte sich Büroraum mit "Kadi International", besessen und gesteuert von niemand geringerem als Ptechs Lieblingsinvestoren und "Specially Designated Global Terrorist", Yassin al-Qadi. 2003 sagte der Chefterrorfahnder Richard Clarke:

"BMI gibt sich öffentlich als Finanzdienstleister für Muslime in den USA aus, doch die Investorenliste zeigt die Möglichkeit, dass diese Fassade nur dazu diente, Terrorunterstützung zu tarnen."

Suheil Laheir war Chefarchitekt von Ptech. Wenn er gerade keine Software programmierte, die Ptech detailierte Analysen der Operationsstrukturen der schützenswertesten Behörden der US-Regierung zur Verfügung stellt, schrieb er Artikel welche den heiligen Krieg des Islams (den Dschihad) preisen. Er zitierte auch Abdullah Azzam, Osama Bin Laden's Mentor und Kopf von Maktab al-Khidamat, einem Vorläufer von Al-Kaida.

Dass einer solch ungewöhnlichen Aufstellung von Personen Zugang zu einigen der heikelsten Behörden in der US-Regierung gewährt wurde, ist erschreckend genug. Dass sie Software hatten, die ihnen erlaubte jeden Prozess und jede Operation dieser Behörden zu kartographieren, zu analysieren und darauf zuzugreifen, mit der Absicht Schwachstellen zu finden, ist genauso erschreckend. Am beunruhigensten aber ist die Verbindung zwischen Ptech und jenen Behörden die in ihrer Plicht versagten, die Amerikanische Bevölkerung am 11. September 2001 zu schützen.



Ptech und 9/11: Der Keller der FAA

In den zwei Jahren vor 9/11 indentifizierte Ptech potentielle Probleme oder Schwächen in den Notfallplänen der FAA für Ereignisse wie eine terroristische Flugzeugentführung im US-Luftraum. Laut ihrem eigenen Geschäftsplan für ihren Vertrag mit der FAA erhielt Ptech Zugriff auf alle Prozesse und Systeme der FAA, die mit ihren Krisenreaktionsprotokollen zu tun hatten. Das beinhaltetete das Begutachten der Schlüsselsysteme und Infrastruktur um "das Netzwerk-Management, die Netzwerksicherheit, das Konfigurationsmanagement, das Fehlermanagement, das Performancemanagement, die Applikationsadministration und die Benutzerhilfe" der FAA zu analysieren. Kurz gefasst hatte Ptech freie Bahn, alle FAA-Systeme und -Prozesse zu untersuchen, die mit exakt demselben Ereignis, das sich am 11. September ereignete, zu tun hatten. Indira Singh zeigte auf, dass Ptech speziell die möglichen Defizite bei der Zusammenarbeit zwischen FAA, NORAD und dem Pentagon im Falle eines Notfalls im US-Luftraum analysierten.

Ptech hatte vermutlich auch Operationsinformationen über die Systeme, die die FAA, NORAD und andere während Notfallübungen wie Vigilant Guardian anwandten, der NORAD-Übung die an 9/11 stattfand und Simulationen beinhaltete in denen entführte Flugzeuge in die Skyline von New York und Regierungsgebäude flogen. Dies ist wichtig, weil es viele Anzeichen dafür gibt dass solche Drills NORADs Eingreifen gegen die wirklichen Entführungen, die an diesem Tag stattfanden, verhinderte. Wie Michael Ruppert aufzeigt, könnte ein feindlicher Agent mit Zugang zu Ptechs Hintertür in die FAA Systeme, an 9/11 absichtlich falsche Signale auf dem Radarschirm der FAA einfügen. Dieses Szenario würde den Phantomflug 11 erklären den die FAA NORAD um 9:24 Uhr berichtete (kurz nachdem Flug 11 bereits das World Trade Center traf), ein Bericht dessen Quelle die 9/11-Untersuchungs- kommision als unauffindbar deklariert.

Kurz gesagt lief Ptechs Software auf den kritischen Reaktionssystemen zu den Anschlägen an 9/11 auch an 9/11. Die Software wurde gestaltet, um dem Benutzer einen kompletten Überblick über alle Daten in Echtzeit zu geben, die in einer Organisation ausgetauscht werden. Der Vater der Unternehmenssoftware John Zachman erklärte, dass man mit einem heiklen Server mit installierter Ptech Software "wüsste wo die Zugangsorte sind, wie man hineingelangt, wo die Schwachstellen sind und wie man ihn zerstören kann".




Unterdrückte Untersuchungen

In den späten 90er Jahren führte Robert Wright — ein FBI-Spezialagent im Chigagoer Büro — die Ermittlung einer Terroristenfinanzierung an, genannt Vulgar Betrayal. Von Anfang an wurde die Ermittlung von oben behindert, den Ermittlern wurden nicht einmal angemessene Computer zugeteilt um ihre Arbeit zu tun. Durch Wrights Vorraussicht und Ausdauer erzielten die Ermittlungen trotzdem einige Erfolge, inklusive der Beschlagnahmung von 1.4 Millionen $ an Anleihen, die auf Al-Quadi zurückverfolgt werden konnten. Wright war erfreut als ihm ein erfahrener Agent zugewiesen wurde um im bei der Untersuchung "des Gründers und Finanziers von Ptech" zu helfen, aber der Agent arbeitete nicht und erhöhte während seiner ganzen Zeit für den Fall lediglich den bürokratischen Aufwand.

Kurz nach den Anschlägen auf US-Botschaften in Afrika 1998 begann "Vulgar Betrayal" eine Geldspur, welche Al-Qadi mit den Angriffen in Verbindung bringt, aufzudecken. Als er eine Kriminaluntersuchung zu den Verbindungen vorschlug, geriet laut Wright sein Vorgesetzter in Rage und sagte:

"Sie werden keine Kriminaluntersuchungen eröffnen. Ich verbiete es jedem von euch. Ihr werdet keine Untersuchungen gegen diese Geheimdienstsubjekte starten".

Wright wurde ein Jahr später von der "Vulgar Betrayal" Untersuchung wegversetzt und die Untersuchung wurde im darauffolgendem Jahr eingestellt. Nach 9/11 suchte Indira Singh – eine Risikomanagement-Beraterin für JP Morgan – nach Unternehmensarchitektursoftware um die nächste Generation des Risikomanagements auf dem Finanzmarkt zu implementieren. Beeindruckt von deren Kundenliste, lud Singh Ptech ein, die Software zu demonstrieren. Es war nur kurz bevor sie begann, die Verbindungen zwischen Ptech und der Terrorfinanzierung zu entdecken. Sie arbeitete erschöpfend daran diese Verbindungen zu dokumentieren und aufzudecken, um das FBI in Boston dazu zu bewegen, ihre eigene Untersuchung in Sachen Ptech anzustellen, aber ihr wurde von einem Agenten gesagt, sie wäre in einer besseren Position dies zu untersuchen, als jemand innerhalb des FBIs. Trotz der hartknäckigen Bemühungen Singhs und der Aussagen von Firmeninsidern, informierte das FBI keine der Behörden, die mit Ptech zusammenarbeiteten, dass es Besorgnis bezüglich der Firma oder ihrer Software gibt.

Ende 2002 wurden im Rahmen der "Operation Green Quest" – eine vom Verbraucherministerium angeführte überbehördliche Untersuchung zu Terrorfinanzierung – die Büros von Ptech, aufgrund iher Verbindungen zu Al-Qadi und anderen durchsucht. Am selben Tag, dem Tag der Durchsuchung, erklärte der Pressesprecher des weißen Hauses Ari Fleischer die Firma für sicher. Artikel aus den Massenmedien, welche Ptech verteidigten nachdem die Geschichte aufflog, verkündedeten jedoch dass die Fima Wochen im Voraus von der Durchsuchung informiert wurde, in der Hoffnung der Leser merke nicht, dass dies die Durchsuchung vereitelt und die Ergebnisse zunichte macht. Möglicherweise führte Michael Chertoff eine Initiative an, dem FBI die totale Kontrolle über Green Quest zu übertragen, das behaupten zumindest Mitarbeiter des Verbraucherschutzministeriums, die ihm vorwerfen die Ermittlungen sabotiert zu haben. Es wurden direkt nach der Ptech-Durchsuchung keine Anklagen gegen Al-Qadi oder irgendjemanden erhoben, der mit der Firma verbunden war. Chertoff sollte zum Chef des Heimatschutzministeriums werden.

Der 9/11-Untersuchungsbericht geht offentsichtlich nicht auf Ptech ein. Angesichts der unglaublichen Informationen über diese Firma und die Verbindungen zum "Specially Designated Global Terrorist" Yassin al-Qadi, ist dies überraschend. Diese aufsehenerregende Unterlassung wird jedoch weitaus ominöser, wenn man bedenkt, dass der Co-Vorsitzende der Untersuchungskommission, Thomas Kean, ein 24-Millionen-$-Geschäft mit der mit Al-Qadi in Verbindung stehenden BMI gemacht hat.

Über ein Jahrzehnt lang wurden Untersuchungen zu Ptech, den Angestellten und Investoren, von Leuten in Schlüsselpositionen unterdrückt oder abgestellt. Aber all das änderte sich plötzlich.

Eine Wende im Fall

Das Büro des Bostoner FBIs gab eine Anklage von 2007 gegen Oussama Ziade, ehemaliger CEO von Ptech, und Buford George Peterson, ehemaliger COO und CFO von Ptech, frei. Die Anklage beschuldigt die beiden, wissentlich die Ermittler über die Ausmaße Al-Qadis Investitionen und seiner Verbindungen belogen zu haben. In einer anderen freigegebenen Anklage von 2005 wird Ziade beschuldigt, Transaktionen mit Al-Qadis Eigentum getätigt zu haben, ein Bundesverbrechen, denn Al-Qadi war zu dieser Zeit bereits ein "Specially Designated Global Terrorist". Wenn die beiden schuldig gesprochen werden, drohen ihnen 30 Jahre Haft und eine Geldstrafe in Höhe von einer Million $.

Ob dies ein wichtiger Durchbruch in dem Fall und der Beginn der offiziellen Entwirrung der Ptech-Story ist, hängt wahrscheinlich davon ab, wieviel politischer Druck von der informierten Öffentlichkeit ausgeht.

Zwei Fragen müssen noch beantwortet werden: Passierte das wahre "Cyber-9/11? an 9/11? Und wird sich die Öffentlichkeit bemühen, eine Antwort auf diese Frage zu verlangen?

On April 23, 2007, I sat down in Washington, D.C. with FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds for an extensive interview, which was published in the Armenian Weekly and on ZNet and widely circulated. On Aug. 18, 2009, I conducted a follow-up phone interview with Edmonds, who was visiting New Zealand. The interview is an overview of what has transpired in her case since 2007, with emphasis on her deposition in the Schmidt vs. Krikorian case in Ohio earlier this month.

Edmonds, an FBI language specialist, was fired from her job with the FBI's Washington Field Office in March 2002. Her crime was reporting security breaches, cover-ups, blocking of intelligence, and the bribery of U.S. individuals including high-ranking officials. The "state secrets privilege" has often been invoked to block court proceedings on her case, and the U.S. Congress has even been gagged to prevent further discussion.Edmonds uncovered, for example, a covert relationship between Turkish groups and former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), who reportedly received tens of thousands of dollars in bribes in return for withdrawing the Armenian Genocide Resolution from the House floor in 2000.

Born in Iran in 1970, Edmonds received her BA in criminal justice and psychology from George Washington University, and her MA in public policy and international commerce from George Mason University. She is the founder and director of the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition (NSWBC) and in 2006 received the PEN/Newman's Own First Amendment Award. She speaks Turkish, Farsi, and Azerbaijani.

Khatchig Mouradian—I asked you in 2007 what had changed during the five years since 2002, when you first contacted the Senate Judiciary Committee to reveal the story on Turkish bribery of high-level U.S. officials. You said, "There has been no hearing and nobody has been held accountable. We are basically where we started…" Two more years have passed, we have a new president, and I have to ask the same question again. Has there been any change?

Sibel Edmonds—Nothing has changed. As far as the Congress is concerned, the Democrats have been the majority since November 2006 and I have had zero interest from Congress on having hearings—any hearings—on this issue, whether it's the states secrets privilege portion of it or the involved corruption cases. The current majority has been at least as bad as the previous one. At least the Republicans were gutsy enough to come and say, We're not going to touch this. But the new majority is not saying anything!

The Obama Administration is pretty new. For what I see, they are continuing the previous administration's state secrets privilege policies. As far as the whistleblower protection and related legislations are concerned, the new White House has already made it clear that they do not want to provide any protection for national security whistleblowers—these are the whistleblowers from the FBI, CIA, and all the other intelligence and law enforcement agencies and, of course, the Defense Department.

As far as the mainstream media is concerned, at least from what I have seen, the situation has actually gotten worse. To me that seems to be the major reason behind the Congress' and the White House's inaction and lack of desire to pursue accountability. As long as the pressure from the mainstream media is not there, of course they aren't going to act. They are driven by that pressure, and the mainstream media in the U.S. today does not fulfill its role and responsibility by providing that pressure.

Of the three—Congress, the executive branch, and the media—I would say the biggest culprit here is the mainstream media.

K.M.—The most recent example of the deafening silence of the mainstream media was your deposition during the Schmidt vs. Krikorian case on Aug. 8. There, you spoke, under oath, about how the Turkish government and a network of lobby groups and high-ranking U.S. officials and Congressmen have engaged in treason and blackmail. A big story by any standards, it was only covered by Armenian newspapers and a few blogs. How do you explain this silence?

S.E.—I know field reporters who are so excited and want to chase the story. But when they went to their papers—and I'm talking about mainstream media and very good investigative journalists—their editors are refusing to touch it. When you watch the video or read the transcript, you will see how explosive the deposition was. And remember, I was speaking under oath. If by any standard, if I were to lie or be untruthful in any way, I would go to jail. I am answering these questions under oath, and yet, the mainstream media is refusing to touch it. And this is very similar to what we saw with the AIPAC/Larry Franklin case.

I have emphasized the fact that the American Turkish Council [ATC], the Turkish lobby, and these Turkish networks, they work together, in partnership with AIPAC [American Israel Public Affairs Committee] and JINSA [Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs]. So not only is there pressure on media outlets from the Turkish lobby and the corrupt U.S. persons involved, but they also have this pressure placed on the media via their partners from the Israel lobby—and the latter's influence on the mainstream media in the U.S. is undeniable.

The irony is that my deposition has made it to the front page of Turkish newspapers—and Turkey doesn't even pride itself with freedom of the media—yet the mainstream media has not written a single word about it.

K.M.—In an article you wrote about the 4th of July titled, "It Ain't about Hot Dogs and Fireworks," you say: "Recall the words of the Constitution Oath that all federal employees, all federal judges, all military personnel, all new citizens are required to take, step back, and pay special attention to these lines: 'support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies—foreign and domestic.' Now ask yourself who is meant by 'domestic' enemies."

Talk about these "domestic enemies."

S.E.—The domestic enemies I refer to are the U.S. officials, whether elected or appointed, who do not represent the interest of the American people—whether they are national security or foreign policy-related interests—and instead, they represent their own greed, their own financial benefit and/or foreign interests. A good example here is Dennis Hastert.

Less than three years after Vanity Fair ran a story about Hastert's covert relationship with Turkish groups, Hastert's group announced that it's the registered lobbyist for the government of Turkey receiving, $35,000 a month from the Turkish interests. How much more vindication does the American mainstream media want? This man, for years, cashed in while he was under oath to be loyal and represent American interests and the Constitution. While in Congress, this man was not only representing foreign governments, but also foreign criminal entities. As soon as this man got out of Congress, he came out of the closet and officially became a representative of foreign interests. Bob Livingston [a former Republican Congressman from Louisiana] is another example. As soon as he got out of Congress, he registered under FARA [Foreign Agents Registration Act] to represent foreign interests. Steven Solarz [a former Democratic Congressman from New York] is yet another example.

Another prominent example is Mark Grossman at the State Department. For years, he has been representing foreign entities. In fact, he's been violating criminal laws in the U.S. And guess what? He leaves the State Department in 2005 and he's immediately placed on the payroll by a company in Turkey called Ihlas Holding, and he goes and joins a lobby and starts representing Turkish entities' interests.

These opportunities do not come when these people leave their offices. In order for these people to secure these jobs and lucrative payments, they have to serve these foreign entities while they are in office. And they have done just that!

The victims here are the American people, their national security, and the integrity of this government. And in many cases that I know about, it is about our national security-related, intelligence-related information that is being easily provided to foreign entities by these individuals. Based on the laws we have since the beginning of this nation, these people should be prosecuted criminally.

K.M.—I am reminded of the saying, "God protect me from my friends, and I'll take care of my enemies." Isn't Turkey supposed to be an ally of the U.S.?

S.E.—If you were to go and see our government's own latest report, under the espionage section, the top countries are Israel, China, with Turkey coming third or fourth. You are looking at two ally countries here, Israel and Turkey, penetrating and stealing our intelligence, military, and classified technology information. Why would your allies penetrate your State Department, Department of Defense, and get away with it? Why would your allies want to steal from you?

K.M.—Let's talk about the Krikorian vs. Schmidt case. Specifically, why did you decide to testify and what can you say about the efforts to block your testimony?

S.E.—I was contacted by Mr. Krikorian's attorneys, who said they wanted to receive my sworn testimony and also depose me as a witness on the case they had in court. I went and checked out their case, and I saw that it involves the Turkish lobby and certain Turkish interest groups, and also, a Representative, Jean Schmidt [R-Ohio], who was receiving campaign donations from these groups. I saw, based on the publicly available information from their case that there was a pattern, and decided that my testimony would be directly relevant and extremely important to this case, despite the fact that I did not have any information specifically about Schmidt (I left the FBI in 2002). So I said yes, if they were to subpoena me and officially ask for my deposition under oath, I would provide it for them.

And then I fulfilled my obligation, as a former FBI contractor who has signed various non-disclosure agreements, to inform the FBI and the Department of Justice that I have been requested to provide my testimony and I am supposed to let you know. They had a day or so to respond. They passed the deadline. And after the deadline, they came back with some whimsical unconstitutional warning saying that under the non-disclose agreement, the FBI and the Department of Justice needed 30 days to review what I was about to testify. I had the attorneys check that and it turned out this is not legal, because oral testimony cannot be submitted—you don't know what is going to be asked in court. Therefore, the warning they gave me was unconstitutional and not legal. They didn't have any legal grounds to stop me from testifying, so I went and, under oath, during this five-hour long deposition, answered all the questions, and talked about everything I knew that had to do with Congressional corruption cases that involved various Turkish entities.

K.M.—For years now, this has been a very frustrating issue for you. Have you given up at this point? Is there any hope for change?

S.E.—On the micro level, I have given up. I have done everything anybody could possibly think of, whether it's approaching the Congress, the court, the Inspector General's office, the mainstream media, or providing testimony under oath. There's nothing left to do. It is what it is. It's being blocked.

On the macro level, I am a U.S. citizen and I am a mother. I have the obligation, the responsibility, to defend the Constitution when it's my part, my role, to make a difference. And for that, I will never give up. In the U.S., we are witnessing many elements of what we consider a police state. I expect that in countries like Iran, Turkey, Egypt, or Saudi Arabia. But we're looking at these elements in the U.S., a nation that prides itself at being at the forefront of freedom, democracy, and civil liberties. What happened to that nation?

As a mother, I want to raise my daughter in a place where she feels free to express her opinion. She is right now in a country where her mother has been silenced with gag orders and state secrets privilege.

I grew up with these and I don't want my daughter to grow up with these.
